Dr. Marc Penn is a cardiologist in the Department of
Cardiovascular Medicine in the Heart and Vascular Institute of Cleveland Clinic.
He is Director of the Bakken Heart-Brain Institute and Director of the Skirball
Laboratory of Cardiovascular Cellular Therapeutics. In 2008 he stepped down as
Medical Director of the Coronary Intensive Care Unit to become the first
director of the Center for Cardiovascular Cell Therapy at the Cleveland Clinic.
He also serves as the Associate Director of the Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr.
Penn is board certified in Cardiovascular Medicine.
Dr. Penn completed his undergraduate and post graduate work at Case Western
Reserve University completing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Penn earned
his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He
completed his Internal Medicine training at University Hospitals of Cleveland
and his Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. He joined the
professional staff of Cleveland Clinic in July of 2000.
Dr. Penn’s education and training have helped him developing drug delivery
systems for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, including studies to
optimize gene therapy and stem cell therapy for the regeneration of myocardial
tissue from which several patents are pending. Dr. Penn has an academic
appointment at Case Western Reserve University in the Department of Biomedical
Engineering and the Bioengineering Center at Cleveland State University. He is
recipient of the 2000 Joseph Cash Memorial Prize for Clinical Outcomes Research
and the 1999 Irvine H. Page Young Investigator award presented by the National
American Heart Association, among others.
In 2001, Dr. Penn was named Director of the Experimental Cardiology Laboratory
in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. This
laboratory is dedicated to the discovery and implementation of novel drug, cell
and gene therapies, and devices to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Penn has been an invited lecturer at international symposiums and
conferences and is author or co-author of numerous published articles,
abstracts, book chapters and books on a wide range of topics, from diabetes and
lipoprotein oxidation; mechanisms of clot formation in atherosclerotic arteries,
optimal management of patients with acute aortic dissection, and stem cell and
gene based therapies for acute myocardial infarction and heart failure. He is
the Editor or co-Editor of 3 books including Stem Cells and Myocardial
Regeneration published by Humana Press.
Dr. Penn is an active inventor, and is named on several patent applications
under review, including several in the area of stem cell based therapies for the
treatment of chronic heart failure. He is the founder of Juventas Therapeutics,
a privately funded regenerative medicine based myocardial therapeutics company
founded on intellectual property developed in his laboratory. He is a founder
and angel investor in Cour Therapeutics. He is the founding CMO and inventor in
Prognostix, Inc, a diagnostic company based on biomarkers associated with
coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction and other inflammatory diseases.
He is a founder and CSO of Cardionomic, a company exploiting neuromodualtion of
the heart to improve outcomes in patients with chronic heart failure. He is an
angel investor and CSO for Cour Pharma, a Kalamazoo, MI based company optimizing
drug design to minimize cardiovascular sides effects of current and future
pharmaceuticals. He served on the Scientific Advisory Board Frantz Medical
Ventures (New York City) and a Venture Partner with Oakwood Medical Investors
(St. Louis, MO). He received the Innovator of the Year Award from the Cleveland
Clinic in 2006. In October of 2008 Dr. Penn became the Senior Medical Director
for Emerging Businesses at Cleveland Clinic.
